Course Information
Course Description

This course promotes individual responsibility for optimal well being, encompassing local and national health concerns, personal health risk factors, life style behaviors and preventive health measures.

Student Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, the student will:

A. Recognize, describe and explain social institutions, structures and processes and the complexities of a global culture and diverse society. Students will recognize, describe and explain the social institutions of economics, politics and government, family, religion, education and health and medicine that affect health and wellness and the complexities of a global culture and diverse society as they affect wellness.

B. Think critically about how individuals are influenced by political, geographic, economic, culture and family institutions on wellness and contrast the resulting belief system to that of another culture.

C. Explore the relationship between the individual and society as it affects the personal behavior, social development and quality of life of the individual, the family and community. Students will demonstrate an understanding of how the relationship between the individual and society affects the personal behavior, social develpment and quality of life of the individual, the family and the community as related to wellness components and issues.

D. Examine the impact of behavioral and social scientific research on major contemporary issues and their disciplines/effects on individuals. Students will examine research on the issues of addiction, drug usage, sexuality, rape/date rape, the transmission of sexually transmissible diseases, weight managment and body image, the use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs and how this research can be applied and affect individuals.

E. Using the most appropriate principles, methods and technologies, perceptively and objectively gather, analyze and present social and behavioral science research data, draw conclusions and apply those conclusions to one's life and society. Students will be able to examine case studies, wellness problems and situations and draw logical conclusions and apply them to one's life and society by developing a wellness lifestyle.

Content is presented online, in the textbook, on websites and/or in the CDRom that accompanies the textbook. The instructional process includes the completion of assignments, quizzes, papers and the posting of responses to discussion topics.

Hardware Requirements

Assessment and Grading
Method of Evaluation

Evaluation items include Assignments, Quizzes, Discussion postings, Midterm Exam, and Final Exam. The course grade is based on total points.

Grading Point Scale:

A = 6000-5000 Points

B = 4999-4000 Points

C =3999-3000 Points

D = 2999-2000 Points

F=below 2000 Points

Grading Scale

90-100% of total attainable points

80-89% of total attainable points

70-79% of total attainable points

60-69% of total attainable points

0-59% of total attainable points

Testing Procedure / Policy

Quizzes and exams are taken online. They must be taken within the availability dates posted on the course Calendar. Quizzes may be taken 3 times with the highest score counting. The Midterm and Final Exams may be taken only once. All quizzes and exams have a time limit. Do not open, view or print quizzes or exams prior to taking and submitting the quizzes and exams. Quizzes and exams should be taken early in the availability period in case problems occur. Be certain to take quizzes and exams with a reliable browser, good connection and reliable computer because the quiz/exam will not be reset if technology fails. Computers are available on campus for student use.

Major Assignments

Assignment files must be downloaded/saved from the Dropbox link. Answers are entered on the complete, original assignment file. Completed assignments are uploaded/submitted through the Dropbox link. There is an assignment for every chapter with two or more for some Chapters . Assignments must be done in Microsoft Word. The file extension must be doc If the assignment file will not open, your grade will be a zero. Assignment files may not be sent as an attachment to e-mail. Assignments must be submitted electronically through the assignment Dropbox tool by the DUE Date. Due dates are posted to the calendar. Most assignments are available for a two week period. Submit early in the availability period so that if there are problems, there is time for resubmission.

Individual PowerPoint Presentation=300points.

 

Participation / Attendance Policy

Hybrid/Split classes start the first day of the semester. To be considered attending students must be an active participant in the course. An active participant is up to date on all work posted to the course calendar found in the Calendar link.

Students must attend class scheduled every Friday during the enrolled semester. 

Students will recieve 100 points for arriving to class on time. 

Student are allowed to miss up to 3 days without a letter grade drop. 

Example: Grade "A" will drop to a "B"  or 100 points for each day missed will be taken off your final score for the semester

Email Guidelines

All email to the instructor regarding the course must be sent through the D2L course website email. Emails may be sent by going to Classlist, selecting the person, Composing and Sending the email or by Replying to an email that has been sent to you.

Each student has been provided a Southwest e-mail account. Please do not email your classmates unless the topic relates specifically to this course. E-mails that contain advertisements, solicitations, personal interests, etc. are strictly forbidden. Below are a few guidelines that you should keep in mind when sending email:

  • Always include a subject line.
  • Typing in all CAPS is considered SHOUTING in Cyberspace. So please use upper and lower case characters when sending e-mails.
  • Remember, without facial expressions some comments may be taken the wrong way. Be careful in wording your e-mails and use good Netiquette
  • Use standard fonts.
  • Do not send large attachments without permission.
  • Respect the privacy of other class members.

Online instructors will respond to all e-mails within 48 hours.

Academic Misconduct

Sharing or copying files and other students' assignments is considered academic dishonesty. Assignments, quizzes and exams must be the original work of the individual student.

Plagiarism, cheating, and other forms of academic dishonesty are prohibited. A student guilty of academic misconduct, either directly or indirectly, through participation or assistance, is immediately responsible to the instructor of the class. The instructor has the authority to assign an “F” grade or a zero for the exercise or examination, or to assign an “F” for the course.
