Effective Use of Collaborative Learning in a Community College Setting

Many jobs require employees to collaborate on a project or work together to achieve a goal, yet that opportunity to practice those skills while still in college are rare. Our team would like to share the results of a collaborative project in our Composition I classes to encourage more of our colleagues to implement these ideas. We will share our assignment which required groups conduct primary research, write about their results, and present to the class using an innovative form of media; tips on how to select groups; and their surprising responses to this assignment. We have specific examples of what worked and what didn’t work as well as how we navigated the drama some groups encountered.
